Liposuction in Virginia Beach
Dr. Ben Hugo, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs liposuction in Virginia Beach. In fact, he has performed liposuction at his cosmetic surgery practice for more than 20 years and has taken a special interest in refining the techniques, using state-of-the-art technology including SmartLipo Triplex™ laser lipolysis to achieve highly precise and pleasing results.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty, suction lipectomy or liposculpture) is consistently the most popular and successful procedure performed to remove fat permanently from selected areas of the body.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction device to remove fat cells through a very thin metal tube (cannula) inserted under the skin. Liposuction will permanently reshape body contours. We aim to achieve a smooth shape and balanced figure, removing fat deposits that create disproportionately large bulges. Facial liposuction is a popular choice, and it can also be used in breast reduction.
Is Liposuction Right for Me?
While liposuction is a fat-removal procedure, it is not considered to be a method for losing weight. The best candidates for liposuction are within 30 percent of their ideal body weight and understand that it is not a treatment for obesity, dimpled skin, stretch marks, or cellulite. Patients who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone will see the best results, as the skin will conform to the previously hidden underlying contours, revealing a new, slimmer look.
Ideally, liposuction is used to eliminate pockets of fat that will not go away despite a person's best efforts to lose them via diet or exercise. Lifestyle changes and other healthy choices can lead someone to shed dozens of pounds, but fatty deposits can still cling to problem areas.
Liposuction can be very effective in safely removing up to 10 to 15 pounds of fat. When applied to selected body areas, a very significant improvement in contour, shape and size can be achieved, even when patients are somewhat overweight. These areas include:
Tummy: Whether you call it the belly, abdomen, gut, or tummy, this is area where a bulge of fat can make your stomach appear to be sticking out. The abdomen is a very common area for liposuction.
Waist: Removing fat from the area above the hips can help clothes fit better and create a slimmer silhouette.
Thighs: Liposuction applied here can impact the outer thighs, as well as the buttocks, an area where many people find that large fatty deposits develop.
Arms: Fat can collect on your upper arms, giving them a flabby appearance.
Breasts: Overly large breasts can be reduced via a procedure that may include liposuction to remove fat in addition to glandular or other tissue.
Back: Fat on the mid and lower back can be removed as a standalone procedure or part of a whole-body liposuction treatment.
Neck: Facial liposuction can eliminate fat that has collected beneath the chin and on the neck, creating the appearance of a double chin.
If you have questions about how liposuction can impact any or all of these areas, be ready to discuss them at your consultation, when Dr. Hugo can explain what to expect from the procedure and its application on various areas of the body.
The Liposuction Procedure
There are various types of liposuction available in Virginia Beach, but they all work on the same principle of fat removal by suction. At your preoperative consultation, Dr. Hugo will discuss the benefits of the various techniques and technologies, including SmartLipo Triplex™ laser lipolysis. He will help you select the appropriate procedure to suit your individual needs.
We perform liposuction procedures in our fully equipped, state-of-the-art outpatient operating suite, certified to the highest standards by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), located within Dr. Hugo's office in Virginia Beach. Light sedation or anesthesia is administered by board-certified anesthetists to ensure comfort and achieve optimal results. The process will typically proceed as follows:
Before the operation, Dr. Hugo will ask you to stand while he marks you with a pen to determine exactly where the fat will be removed. If a small area is being treated (e.g. a bulge of the lower abdomen), the procedure can be done under local anesthesia with an oral sedative. If you require multiple areas of liposuction or if Dr. Hugo anticipates that large volumes of fat will be removed, the procedure can be done either under a very light general anesthetic or under light intravenous sedation where you are asleep and do not remember anything, such as when you have a wisdom tooth removed by a dentist.
First, fluid containing local anesthetic is injected into the areas where fat is to be removed. This solution is known as "super wet" or "tumescent," and is a combination of saline, epinephrine, and lidocaine.
The saline is a sterile form of salt water that helps the tissue to swell and grow firm. It also begins breaking down the fat targeted for removal. The epinephrine causes the capillaries in the tissue to contract, which constricts blood flow and minimizes blood loss during the procedure. The lidocaine is an anesthetic to dull sensation in the area.
Dr. Hugo and his team will then apply an External Ultrasound Assist device to the surface of the skin for a few minutes. This is a non-invasive step, which helps to diffuse the injected anesthetic fluid and provide a smoother contour, which in turn allows for more precision when the fat is removed and helps prevent bruising.
Tiny incisions will be made in the area or areas where fat is to be removed. A narrow metal tube (cannula) is inserted to break up and vacuum the fat from beneath your skin. Most patients undergoing liposuction will benefit from the use of the SmartLipo Triplex™ laser system together with liposuction. This is applied during the procedure in order to promote skin and tissue tightening. The small incisions are usually sutured with stitches that will dissolve on their own in a week or two, and the incision sites will not be easily noticeable once you are healed.
The liposuction cost in Virginia Beach and time required to perform your procedure depends on the size and number of areas being treated and the volume of fat being removed. Typically, Dr. Hugo performs only one surgery per day and takes time and care to achieve the best possible contour and results.

Immediately after liposuction surgery, you will be in our recovery area and a nurse will stay with you and make sure you are comfortable until it is time to go home. After your surgery, you will be given instructions regarding your care and activity. Any discomfort from swelling, bruising, and soreness will lessen each day, and in the meantime we will instruct you on the use of pain medication to maintain a good comfort level. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to help prevent infection.
You will be placed in a tight surgical compression garment to help encourage the skin to retract around the newly contoured area. The garment is preferably used for one to six weeks after liposuction, until the swelling resolves.
The doctor may also implant drains to prevent excess fluid from pooling. You should follow any care instruction for the drains Dr. Hugo gives you to promote good health and healing in the days after your surgery.
Getting Back to Normal After Liposuction Surgery
We will want you to start walking soon after the liposuction procedure. You should begin to feel better in a couple of days and be back to work within a few days. You can expect to drive after three to five days (after pain medication has been discontinued). You are able to begin gradual exercise and other strenuous activity after two to three weeks. You may see some bruising for about a month, and you should take care to avoid sun exposure to these areas.
Our entire staff is dedicated to help you achieve "your" good outcome. You will visit our office at about five days, two weeks, and one, six, and 12 months postoperatively.
After a few weeks, as the "new you" emerges, we are confident you'll be happy. During this time, you may see some shifting in the tissue, since any remaining fat must settle into place in its new position.
How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?
The results of liposuction are permanent as long as postoperative weight is maintained. Your clothes will fit better, and you'll feel much more comfortable with your appearance. Even if a few pounds are gained, it may be more evenly distributed.
This is because of how fat is built in the body. When people gain weight, their fat cells grow, getting larger and more voluminous. Losing weight shrinks those cells back down, but they remain in the body where they first developed.
Liposuction, on the other hand, physically removes the unwanted fat cells from where they are deposited, so there is no longer concern with these cells impacting the body. Note that the remaining cells, however, can grow larger if allowed to do so, making a healthy diet and regular exercise an important part of preserving the look achieved by liposuction.
What If My Skin Is Loose After Liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat cells, but there may be lingering reminders of them even after they are gone. Skin that stretched out due to fatty bulges may not tighten back into place on its own after the underlying fat is gone. Patients with excess, sagging skin on their belly, as well as lax abdominal muscles, may opt to receive a tummy tuck in addition to or even apart from liposuction. A tummy tuck can involve some liposuction, but its primary function is to provide a firmer, toner, sleeker abdomen.
Liposuction performed on other areas of the body may also be followed by some skin tightening. Facial liposuction, for instance, is often accompanied by a facelift to create a slimmer look unhidden by drooping, sagging skin.
Similarly, a breast reduction may be enough to achieve the desired results, but patients who want more than just smaller breasts, who are seeking even greater projection for their chest, may opt for a breast lift as well, which tightens and raises the breasts.
Some facial skin laxity and uniformity issues, which are not addressed by liposuction, can by handled by laser skin rejuvenation, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles, scars, blemishes, and discolorations by promoting the development of collagen and tightening the skin.
Alternatives to Liposuction
While liposuction is a very effective means of getting a new silhouette, it is not the only option for people looking to eliminate some fat from their body. CoolSculpting® is a popular noninvasive treatment that singles out fat cells for damage by freezing them. Once destroyed by the cold, which leaves other tissues and body systems unaffected, the fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body. While not a surgery, this treatment is similar to liposuction in that it permanently eliminates fat cells.
Since there are so many variations on liposuction, as well as other fat-reduction treatments to consider, it is important to be clear about your goals. You may have a particular procedure in mind, but the results are what are most important. Dr. Hugo and his team are experts at assessing each patient and developing a plan to deliver the desired aesthetic change, whether that means using liposuction, a noninvasive method, or some combination of procedures and treatments.
With an excellent artistic sense, Dr. Hugo has built a reputation for consistently providing natural results for his plastic surgery patients. Before and after photos of Dr. Hugo's liposuction patients in the Virginia Beach area are available to help you visualize the possibilities.
