What are Injectable Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers Virginia BeachInjectable fillers are smooth consistency gels used to correct the appearance of facial lines and folds. They are made from hyaluronic acid gel, a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Hyaluronic acid is a key structural component of the skin and tissues that binds water to cells. It may be thought of as the body’s internal moisturizer, creating volume and shape, and acting as a lubricant and shock absorber. Hyaluronic acid concentrations throughout the human body decline with age, causing a loss of volume and the formation of wrinkles and folds.

Injectable fillers are commonly used to diminish the nasolabial folds (smile lines) and lines at the corner of the mouth (marionette lines). They can also contour and plump the lips and soften deep lines around the lips.

How long the effect of injectable fillers lasts varies among individuals and depends on many factors, such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, and age, as well as the degree of perfection demanded by the individual. Studies show that the results of injectable fillers used in the nasolabial folds are visible for up to two years in more than 70 percent of patients. Most people choose to have a touch-up done within two years of the original treatment.

My experiences with Dr. Hugo have been exceptional. He is an excellent practitioner with an artistic eye. He is focused on the individual and the outcomes of his procedures. I cannot recommend him more highly.

Procedure and Recovery

You will receive a topical local anesthetic cream before your filler injections. The injectable fillers are formulated with the local anesthetic lidocaine to further improve comfort during treatment. The filler is injected beneath the skin surface to lift the soft tissue and improve skin wrinkles and folds. Bruising and swelling are usually minimal after treatment and are easily disguised with sunscreen and makeup. You will instantly see results in the treated areas.

Our experienced team of injectors, comprised of Ben Hugo, M.D. and JoAnne Lopes, M.D., will help you select the injectable fillers that are best suited to meet your individual needs in Virginia Beach.

Juvederm Voluma XC

Volume loss in the face is a major reason we lose that youthful profile over the years. A natural process of atrophy and redistribution of collagen and fat occurs with age, resulting in gradual facial sagging and a change of contour.

Two injectables are widely used to correct age-related volume loss and provide facial volume: Sculptra® Aesthetic (a collagen stimulator with results lasting four to five years) and Juvederm Voluma XC (a filler made from the hyaluronic acid gel with results lasting up to two years).

Is Juvederm Voluma XC Right For Me?

Dr. Hugo recommends Juvederm Voluma XC when a limited correction of the upper cheek and mid-face is required. It is also appropriate if an “instant” lift is desired.

Dr. Hugo recommends Sculptra® Aesthetic when a patient needs more generalized facial correction, with a lift of the entire cheek, jawline, and brow. Sculptra® Aesthetic can also improve the appearance of under-eye circles, bags, and hollows.

What is Juvederm Voluma XC?

Juvederm Voluma XC is an injectable filler made from hyaluronic acid gel, a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Hyaluronic acid binds water to cells as an important structural component of the skin. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the body, serving as an internal moisturizer to create volume and shape. As people age, hyaluronic acid concentrations decline throughout their bodies, which causes a loss of volume and the formation of wrinkles and folds.

Juvederm Voluma XC is uniquely formulated with extensive cross-linking, which provides excellent lifting capacity, making it a good choice for restoring volume in the upper cheeks and mid-face. This special cross-linking provides a very smooth consistency for a natural look, and it also helps to avoid degradation, which allows Juvederm Voluma XC to last up to two years, or longer.
